Maurice Codori Sturm III February 24, 1948 - August 6, 2020
Maurice (“Dori”) Codori Sturm III, 72, of Catonsville, Maryland passed away on Thursday evening, August 6, 2020. He was surrounded by his beloved wife and children.
Dori was born on February 24, 1948 in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Woodstock. He attended Mount St. Joseph’s High School and was a star athlete, excelling at track and field. Dori earned a full scholarship to American University for his skill as a javelin thrower, and had aspirations to qualify for the 1972 Olympics in Berlin and join the Army. Those plans were drastically altered when he was hit by a drunk driver at 22 years old -- just two weeks before his wedding day. Unconscious for three months and hospitalized for a year and a half, Dori accepted his new circumstances without complaint or bitterness. Dori’s steadfast optimism and faith helped him recover from the near-fatal accident and begin a new chapter, marrying his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo, and starting a family.
Dori and Mary Jo built a life in Catonsville, Maryland, where they were parishoners at St. Mark’s Parish and active in their sons’ sporting activities. Dori worked for 30 years at Verizon in Baltimore. He enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland with his family and could spend hours happily picking crabs.
Dori offered a wonderful example to his children and grandchildren of what it means to live selflessly -- always humble, patient and kind. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, sons Ryan (wife Rachel), Steven (wife Allison), three grandchildren: Rebecca, Nicholas and Theodore, his sister Cindy Nichols and his brother Michael Sturm.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Candle Light Funeral Home (1835 Frederick Rd, Catonsville, MD 21228) between 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 11.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12 at St. Mark’s Chapel (30 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, Maryland 21228). An interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery (2190 Mt. View Rd, Marriottsville, MD 21104).
